New Zealand Visa

Generally speaking, there are five visa categories for people who want to come to New Zealand to live, work, visit or study.
Skilled Migrant Category
Business and Investment Category
Family Category
Student visas and Other temporary visas.

 

Skilled Migrant Category :
Applying under skill categories has always been the most popular visa class for permanent residency in New Zealand. It offers professionals and trade people with the skills needed in New Zealand the opportunity to work and live permanently in New Zealand.

 

Basic requirements :
  • Age : The main applicant must be between 20 to 55 years old.
  • English language : applicants must have good English (IELTS result 6.5 and above for main applicants unless they have English speaking background).
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.
  • Point Score system : Applicants must pass what is called the “points score system”. Points are allocated for an offer of employment in New Zealand, work experience, qualifications and age. Bonus points are available for employment in areas of identified future growth, cluster or absolute skill shortages and employment outside Auckland. Currently the selected score which applicants must pass is 100.

Business and Investment Category :
Business and Investment category is aim to encourage successful business owner, Business professionals and investors with a proven business or investment record to establish or develop a business in New Zealand. Investor, Entrepreneur and Employees of Relocating Businesses Categories lead to residency in New Zealand, while the Long Term Business Visa Category allows temporary entry.

 

1. Long Term Business Visa/Permit Category (temporary)

 

Successful applicants will be granted multiple entry work visas and permits for periods of up to three years. To be eligible for permanent residence, the applicants must establish and maintain the business according to the business plan during the duration of the long term Business Permit.

 

Basic requirements :
  • English language : applicants must meet the required English standards (IELTS results 5.0 for main applicants unless they have English speaking background).
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.
  • Financial Requirements : The applicant must have, in addition to investment capital, sufficient funds for their maintenance and that of their families.
Business Requirements :
The applicants must :
  • Have a complete business plan of their business proposal, which meets the required standard.
  • Have business experience relevant to their business proposal.
  • Demonstrate that they are genuinely interested in establishing the business in New Zealand.
  • Establish the business in comply with all relevant laws.

 

2. Entrepreneur Category (Residence)

 

Basic requirements :
  • English language : applicants must meet the required English standards (IELTS results 5.0 for main applicants unless they have English speaking background).
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.
  • Financial Requirements : The applicant must have, in addition to investment capital, sufficient funds for their maintenance and that of their families.
Business Requirements :
The applicants must demonstrate that :
  • The business has required the same or a greater level of capital investment as stated the original business proposal submitted for the Long Term Business Visa.
  • They have successfully established a business in New Zealand according to the business plan while holding a permit granted under the Long Term Business Visa Category.
  • They have relevant experience to the new business.
  • The established new business is of beneficial to New Zealand.

3. Investor Category (residency)
The objective of the Investor Category is to attract skilled business people with capital to invest in New Zealand. There are different investor categories: Investor Plus (Investor 1 Category and  Investor (Investor 2 Category).

 

Basic requirements :
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.
  • Business Experience : There is no requirement for Investor 1 Category. For Investor 2 Category,the main applicants must have minimum of 3 years of either owning a lawful business enterprise (at least 25% ownership of the business) or management experience in a lawful business enterprise that has at least five full-time employees and an annual turn-over of NZ$1 million.

  Investor Plus (Investor 1 Category) Investor (Investor 2 Category)
Investment funds NZ$10 million for 3 years. NZ$1.5 million for 4 years
Minimum settlement funds None NZ$1 million
Maximum age None 65
Minimum English language None IELTS  level 3 and above
Minimum time in NZ 73 days each year in years 2 and 3 of the three-year investment period. 146 days each year in years 2, 3, and 4 of your four-year investment period.

Family Category :
There are a number of migration options for partners, children, parents and brothers and sisters of New Zeeland citizens and New Zealand permanent residents.

 

Basic requirements :
  • Sponsorship :
    The applicant must be sponsored by his /her relative who is an eligible sponsor. An eligible sponsor is :
    • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident AND
    • has been in New Zealand for the required number of years AND
    • undertakes sponsorship obligations AND
    • the parent, partner, child, brother or sister of the applicant.
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.

Student Visas :
If you are planning to study in New Zealand for more than 3 months, you will need to apply for a student visa.

 

Basic requirements :
  • English language : Applicants must meet the New Zealand Education Provider’s requirement.
  • Health and Character requirements : Applicants (including family members) must meet specific health and character requirements.
Special requirements :
  • Offer of a Place : Applicants must be accepted and offer a place of study by a registered New Zealand Education Provider. The course undertaking must be approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
  • Financial Requirements : Applicants must provide evidence of sufficient funds to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for the applicants and their family for the duration of their stay in New Zealand.
  • Evidence of Departure Plan : The applicants must provide evidence of how they will leave New Zealand after the course is completed.
